Ford Fusion named Green Car of the Year

6 hrs.

Despite the popular media?s fixation on battery power, automotive insiders are quick to caution that there is no ?silver bullet? solution, no single technology that will likely meet all the needs for tomorrow?s clean and efficient automobiles.

That message was hammered home by the choice of the 2013 Ford Fusion as the Green?Car of the Year, an award designed to focus the spotlight on the latest clean-tech automobiles.

A key to the decision was the fact that the new midsize sedan offers a broad range of powertrain alternatives, from conventional gasoline power up to an all-new plug-in hybrid.

?That?s an example of automotive democracy,? said Ron Cogan, publisher of Green Car Journal, the organizer of the annual award.

Now in its eighth year, the Green Car of the Year Award has taken a decidedly independent ? some would say counter-intuitive ? approach to picking its winners. While several hybrids have claimed the coveted trophy, jurors have also honored diesels, such as the Audi A3 TDI. And this year?s five finalists included two gas-only models: the Eco version of the 2013 Dodge Dart, and the new Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv crossover.

What?s critical, explained Cogan, is recognizing that, while battery cars and plug-ins may deliver some extremely impressive mileage, most have limited sales potential ?and don?t achieve much of an impact on the environment.? ?Technologies such as Ford?s turbocharged EcoBoost engines may not have quite the mpg numbers, but they can ?set a broader example.?

In the case of the 2013 Ford Fusion, the maker has given buyers a broad palette to choose from, said Ford's?marketing manager Dave Mondragon after accepting the Green Car award.

Mondragon said he was clearly pleased with the honor and hopes it will provide Ford with a way to show how much it has changed its approach to fuel economy. ?We?ve moved from being the laggard to the leader,? he said, noting that the Detroit maker has higher mileage ratings on its products in every segment where it directly competes with Toyota.

The Japanese maker ? which had hoped to snag the Green Car award with its own finalist, the new Prius C ? not only has the best-selling hybrid on the market, the original Prius hatchback, but also has been able to burnish a reputation as the market?s green leader.

Ford hopes that the Green Car award will help it challenge Toyota?s perceptive lead, senior marketing executive Amy Marentec told TheDetroitBureau.com. This ?absolutely? helps, she said, hinting that Ford will soon be promoting the honor in its advertising efforts for the Fusion ? and possibly other products.

?We?re going to have to talk this up.?

The Green Car of the Year award was by no means the only indication at the LA Auto Show that the industry is searching for a broad portfolio of environmentally friendly solutions.

There were a number of pure battery-electric and plug-in models ? such as the Chevrolet Spark EV and Honda Civic PHEV ? unveiled at the annual show. But Audi announced four new diesel models, including a TDI version of the flagship A8. Mazda also lifted the cover on its new Mazda6, a midsize sedan that will share the CX-5?s SkyActiv gasoline engine but also get the new SkyActiv-D diesel during the second half of next year.

Senator writes Myanmar leader over seized cargo

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Republican senator is asking Myanmar's president for answers over the reported seizure of a ship's cargo bound for Myanmar with potential nuclear uses.

Japan's Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported North Korea tried to ship materials suitable for uranium enrichment or missile development to Myanmar via China. It said Japanese authorities seized metal pipes and high-specification aluminum alloy at U.S. request when the ship docked in Tokyo in August.

Sen. Richard Lugar, a leading voice in Congress on nonproliferation, wrote Tuesday to Myanmar's President Thein Sein, urging him to disclose the intended recipient of the materials and their planned use. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter Thursday.

The reported seizure heightens concern over whether Myanmar is making good on promises to sever military ties with North Korea, believed to have assisted Myanmar in ballistic missile technology. Myanmar denies having sought nuclear assistance.

Lugar commended reformist leader Thein Sein for recently agreeing to sign up an international agreement that would allow greater U.N. scrutiny of any nuclear activities.

He said the reported Japanese seizure also provided an opportunity for the Myanmar government to demonstrate transparency.

"Peace and stability within ASEAN are potentially impacted by the intended purpose of the ship's cargo," Lugar wrote. ASEAN is Southeast Asia's regional bloc and Myanmar is a member.

Thein Sein has ushered in democratic reforms after decades of direct military rule, helping end the nation's international isolation. Earlier this month, Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to visit the country, also known as Burma.

Mathematics used to identify contamination in water distribution networks

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? None of us want to experience events like the Camelford water pollution incident in Cornwall, England, in the late eighties, or more recently, the Crestwood, Illinois, water contamination episode in 2009 where accidental pollution of drinking water led to heart-wrenching consequences to consumers, including brain damage, high cancer risk, and even death. In the case of such catastrophes, it is important to have a method to identify and curtail contaminations immediately to minimize impact on the public. A paper published earlier this month in the SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics considers the identification of contaminants in a water distribution network as an optimal control problem within a networked system.

"Water supply networks are an essential part of our infrastructure. Sometimes the water in such a network can be contaminated, often by human error, causing the use of polluted water for drinking water production. In the case of such a situation, it is important to have a method to identify the location of the pollution source," says the paper's author, Martin Gugat, explaining the significance of his work. The paper considers a water distribution network with a finite number of nodes where contamination can occur in the pipes.

"The contamination spreads dynamically through the network with time. So, in order to model the system, a model of the evolution in time is necessary," explains Gugat. "In our approach, we use a partial differential equation (PDE) to model how pollution spreads in the network."

By using a PDE model for transport of contaminants, the problem of identifying the source becomes an optimal control problem. The solution is calculated using equidistant time grids, which allows one to determine the values of contamination at all potential sources on the time grid. Available data on pollution and network flow is incorporated into the model.

Employing certain assumptions for travel times through the pipes, the author uses a least-squares method to solve the problem. The least squares method provides approximate solutions to optimization problems that are relatively e?cient to compute using the tools of numerical linear algebra.

This provides a fast method to identify possible contamination sources, explains Gugat. "For a really accurate model, however, a full system of three-dimensional PDEs is necessary. But with three-dimensional PDEs, simulation is only possible for small networks," he says. "This illustrates that to solve real life problems on real networks, there is a trade-off between the accuracy of the model and its utility."

While the method is tested numerically in the paper, additional work would involve testing the system with an existing water network to demonstrate its workability in practice.

Another future direction is toward elimination of the contaminant. "The second step after the identification of the contamination source is a strategy to flush the polluted water out of the network as fast as possible with acceptable operational cost. The development of an optimal strategy for such a rehabilitation of the water supply is an interesting question for future research," says Gugat.

"For a more detailed model of the process, more complex nonlinear PDEs could be used," he continues. "The cost of the numerical treatment of complex PDEs for large networks is prohibitive. Applied mathematics has to offer models that can be used according to the problem requirements to solve problems with network graphs of a realistic size."

Sizing Science: The Geometry of M&Ms

Measurement Mystery: This candy-coated geometry lesson reveals the volume of an M&M. Image: George Retseck

Volume

Introduction
Has an adult ever caught you munching on candy and asked, "How much candy have you eaten?" Instead of saying, "I don't know," and possibly receiving a scolding, wouldn't you rather respond, "I ate precisely 10.7 cubic centimeters of candy"? In this activity, you will investigate which mathematical formula is most accurate for estimating the volume of an M&M. Figure this out and the next time you are discovered while snacking on sweets, you might make a better impression.

Background
Geometry uses math to describe and investigate different points, lines and shapes. A shape is described in geometry using a formula, which is simply a mathematical way to calculate different properties, such as its size, area or volume. Volume is a property of three-dimensional shapes?such as cubes and spheres?and takes into account the space the shapes take up in each of the three different directions.

The challenge of using geometric formulas in the real world is that these mathematical formulas often describe "perfect" or "ideal" shapes. A sphere is an "ideal" three-dimensional shape that is perfectly circular in all three directions. Even though a tennis ball, for example, is spherical in shape, it is not a perfect sphere (think of the lines that mark its surface). Most real-world objects are not simple shapes and require complex geometry to be calculated. The properties of real-world shapes can, however, be approximated, or estimated with a geometric formula. This is called "making a geometric model." The most important part of making a good geometric model is choosing the formula that best describes the object. Using that formula, you can geometrically model all kinds of irregular objects, such as cars, airplanes, toys and M&Ms.

Materials
??? ? Two pieces of paper
??? ? Table or countertop
??? ? Clay or Play-Doh. Use a small amount that you do not mind ruining.
??? ? Metric measuring glass with milliliter markings
??? ? Water
??? ? 110 M&Ms. One seven-ounce (198-gram) bag holds about 210 M&Ms.
??? ? Ruler with centimeter markings
??? ? A pen or pencil
??? ? A computer with an Internet connection

Preparation
??? ? Place a sheet of paper on a clean table or countertop.
??? ? On top of the paper, place a small amount of clay or Play-Doh. Flatten it and stretch it out into a line about 20 centimeters (cm) long by three cm wide. The line should be only a couple cm high. You will be measuring the M&Ms on this.
??? ? The clay or Play-Doh may be ruined by the M&Ms' dyed coating, so use a portion that you will not mind ruining.
??? ? Fill the metric measuring glass with 100 milliliters (ml) of water. If you intend to eat some of the wet M&Ms after this activity is completed, remember to clean the measuring glass carefully before you fill it with water.

Procedure
??? ? Line up 10 M&Ms on their flat side, end to end, on the clay. Make sure the line is straight and flat and that each M&M is touching the next, with no gaps in between. You can poke them into the clay to keep them in a neat row.
??? ? Measure the line of M&Ms in cm and divide this number by 10. This gives you the long diameter of a single M&M candy. What is the long diameter of an M&M candy? Write this measurement down.
??? ? Divide the long diameter by two. This gives you the long radius of a single M&M candy. What is the long radius of an M&M candy? Write this down.
??? ? Remove the M&Ms from the clay.
??? ? Now line up the 10 M&Ms on their side so that you are measuring across the short side. Again, use the clay to hold them in a neat row in which each M&M touches the next.
??? ? Measure the line of M&Ms and divide this number by 10. This gives you the short diameter of a single M&M candy. What is the short diameter of an M&M candy? Write this down.
??? ? Divide the short diameter by two. This gives you the short radius of a single M&M candy. What is the short radius of an M&M candy? Write this down.
??? ? Now you are ready to measure the actual volume of the M&M with a water-displacement test. Make sure that the metric measuring glass has exactly 100 ml of water in it (check by looking at the bottom of the meniscus).
??? ? Dump 100 M&Ms into the glass of water. (If you want to eat soggy M&Ms later, use fresh M&Ms during this stage since the ones you used previously may have clay on them.) What is the new water level of the glass? Write this down.
??? ? Subtract 100 ml from the new water level. Divide this number by 100. This is the actual volume of a single M&M in ml (the same as cubic centimeters). What is the volume of one M&M? Write this down.
??? ? You will now be making some volume calculations using different formulas to see which one best calculates the volume of an M&M. Go to the Unit-Free Volume Calculators page at Mississippi State University.
??? ? Click on the "Full Sphere" link. For the "Radius" box, enter the long radius you measured for a single M&M and click "Calculate." What is the M&M volume using its long radius? Write this down.
??? ? Now for the "Radius" box, enter the short radius instead. What is the M&M volume using its short radius? Write this down.
??? ? Go back to the Unit-Free Volume Calculators page and click on the "Cylinder" link. For the "Outer Radius" box, enter the long radius; for the "Inner Radius" box, enter zero; and for the "Height" box, enter the short diameter. What is the M&M volume using the cylinder formula? Write this down.
??? ? Go back and click on the "Ellipsoid" link. For the "Major Axis" and "Minor Axis" boxes, enter the long diameter (for both). And for the "Vertical Axis" box, enter the short diameter. What is the M&M volume using the ellipsoid formula?
??? ? How do each of the different calculated volumes compare to the actual volume that you measured? Which ones were more and which ones were less? Which calculation came the closest? Which formula do you think is the best one to use for an M&M candy?
??? ? Extra: Another way to look at your data is to calculate the percent difference between each calculation and the actual volume measurement. You can do this by dividing your answer using each formula by the actual volume. Which formulas give you an answer that is closest to, or most different from, the actual volume based on percent difference?
??? ? Extra: You can use this same experiment to find the best formula to calculate any other volume. Try using it for an egg, a football, an apple, a bar of soap, other types of candies or any other irregularly shaped object. Just make sure that you choose an object that can be safely submerged in water! Which formula is the best?
??? ? Extra: The shape of a candy can affect how well many of those candies pack together. Use the water displacement test on a couple differently shaped candies to determine the actual volume of a single candy. Then fill a measuring glass with a certain amount of each type of candy, one type at a time (without water). Divide the volume the candy took up by the number of candies to determine how much space one candy took up, on average, when taking packing into account. How much space does each type of candy take up in the measuring glass (when packing is taken into account) compared with the actual volume of one candy? In other words, which types of candies pack together the best? How do you think their shape affects this?

Israel pulls back from threat to topple Palestinian leadership over UN vote

After weeks of shrill warnings over Thursday's United Nations vote on Palestinian statehood, Israel has backed away from threats to cancel the Oslo peace accords and topple the Palestinian leadership.

Israeli officials are now playing down any immediate sanctions against the Palestinians after it became clear that the request for statehood is likely to gather significant support, which has strengthened since the Israeli assault on Gaza. Several European countries, including France, Switzerland and Spain, will back the Palestinian move, in part out of concern that failing to do so will weaken the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, to the advantage of Hamas.

The Israeli foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, previously drew up proposals saying that if the UN vote went ahead "then Israel must exact a heavy price from Abu Mazen (Abbas), including the possibility of toppling his regime and dismantling the Palestinian Authority". Israeli officials warned that funding to the PA could be cut, peace accords cancelled in part or in whole, and unrestricted construction of Jewish settlements authorised.

But the threats have not deterred the Palestinians nor a significant number of European countries from supporting their bid for "observer state", which is on a par with the Vatican's position at the UN.

Officials in Jerusalem are now instead seeking to disparage the vote as of no great significance in itself.

"We won't cancel any of our agreements," a senior Israeli diplomatic official told reporters. "When we choose to respond, we will carefully weigh our options. We will do everything we can that's within Israeli law and within the framework of the agreements we signed with the Palestinians."

The Israeli move also came under US pressure. Haaretz reported that the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, warned the prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, during talks in Jerusalem last week not to destabilise the Palestinian Authority.

Israel says the Palestinian leadership will instead be judged on how it uses the new non-member state status at the UN, particularly over asking the international criminal court (ICC) to investigate alleged Israeli war crimes.

Abbas is under considerable pressure from Israel, the US and Britain in particular to renounce the option for the Palestinian Authority to accede to the ICC.

Britain said it would abstain in the UN vote unless it received assurances that the Palestinians would not seek to extend the jurisdiction of the ICC over the occupied territories, and unless the Palestinians committed to an immediate and unconditional return to the negotiating table with Israel.

The British foreign secretary, William Hague, in a statement to the House of Commons on Thursday, said: "Up until the time of the vote itself, we will remain open to voting in favour of the resolution if we see public assurances by the Palestinians on these points. However, in the absence of these assurances, the United Kingdom would abstain on the vote."

The draft resolution released by the Palestinians on Wednesday, however, showed that no such concessions had been made.

The Palestinian observer at the UN, Riyad Mansour, told reporters that the PA would neither immediately sign up for the ICC nor renounce its right to do so.

"I don't believe that we are going to be rushing the second day to join everything related to the United Nations, including the ICC," he said.

But Mansour said that if Israel continued to violate international law, in particular by continuing Jewish settlement construction in the occupied territories, then the Palestinians would have to consider "what should we do next to bring Israel into compliance?"

"We're not in the business of trying to prolong this conflict and settle scores," he said. "But we are not fools nor dummies. If they don't move in that direction ... then all of us should be considering all other possible options in order to bring them into compliance."

The Israeli move to downplay the vote appears to be an attempt to diminish embarrassment at the failure of its efforts to persuade most European countries to abstain in the hopes of denying the Palestinians the legitimacy garnered from the support of democratic countries.

The motion is virtually assured of passing because a majority of countries in the general assembly have indicated they will back the statehood measure.

A veteran Palestinian peace negotiator, Hanan Ashrawi, called intense pressure from the US and other countries to get Abbas to drop the UN vote "pathetic" and said it harmed Washington's standing in the Arab world.

Some Disadvantages Of Computer Technology

Every little thing nowadays is run by technology. Safety program runs the Safety for our residence, internet hosting monitors our internet web site, and programmable computer software does our activity such as recording, calculating, and information transferring. You just have to system it to do a certain job, and it will do what you wish it to do. No concerns ask. That is how fantastic technology can do to folks these days.

On the other hand, let us not often appear at the excellent side since Every thing has a negative side as effectively. Pc technology also, has it. It is not all the time that it operates the way we require it to be. There will come a time that it will quit operating. Why? It is simply because of several factors. For instance, our Pc gets infected by a Pc virus and you do not know it simply because the Computer system virus is also powerful that the antivirus that we have cannot detect it. This virus can go by way of our files and software program, destroy it, and quit it from operating. When this occurs, carrying out your everyday job will quit also. When it is left behind, it can lead to worse issues such as destruction and deletion of our files, and even method failure. If this occurs, you may well even want to replace your Personal computer with a new a single.

With all of this, you nonetheless can?t rely on your whole job with the use of technology. Make it a point that you too do it your self even some occasions.

The conference will also include a keynote speech from Nottingham Trent University?s Chancellor, Sir Michael Parkinson, and the NCTJ Awards for Excellence, with two students from the university?s Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism (CBJ) shortlisted for the Student Feature Writer of the Year award.

At last year?s conference CBJ lecturer, Amanda Ball, was recognised for her outstanding contribution to journalism training and education with the 2011 NCTJ chairman?s award.

Nottingham Trent University?s MA Newspaper Journalism course was also recognised by the NCTJ for the highest percentage of students achieving C grade passes or above in all the NCTJ core exams, plus 100 wpm shorthand.

Head of the CBJ, Carole Fleming, said: "This conference will bring journalism professionals from all over the UK to the city and the university. The CBJ is very involved with the NCTJ, so it?s great for them to be bringing discussions on the future of journalism to our doorstep."

Insurgent attacks kill 15, wound dozens in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Insurgents launched attacks against security forces and civilians in central and northern Iraq on Tuesday, killing at least 15 people and wounding dozens, officials said.

A main target was Kirkuk, the largest city in the area claimed by several ethnic groups in a dispute with the central government in Baghdad. The conflict is one of several that threaten the stability of Iraq following the final pullout of U.S. military forces nearly a year ago.

After nightfall in Baghdad, a car bomb exploded near a Shiite mosque following evening prayers in Hurriya neighborhood, killing six worshippers and wounding 20 others, according to police and hospital officials, a sign of another key struggle, between Sunni and Shiite Muslims.

In the north, a police officer said three bombs in parked cars exploded simultaneously in two Kurdish residential areas in the center of the city. One went off near a main Kurdish party headquarters. Five people, including a Kurdish security guard, were killed and 58 others wounded, he said.

A few minutes later, two bombs went off in a market in the Sunni-dominated town of Hawija west of Kirkuk, killing two civilians and wounding five others, he said. Also, five Iraqi army soldiers were wounded when militants detonated bombs near their houses in the nearby town of Tuz Khortmato.

Kirkuk, 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, is home to a mix of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, who all have competing claims to the oil-rich area. The Kurds want to incorporate it into their self-ruled region in Iraq's north, but Arabs and Turkomen are opposed.

Violence has ebbed since the peak of insurgency several years ago, but lethal attacks still occur frequently. No one claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attacks, but car bombs, shootings and roadside devices are the hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq.

In the northeastern province of Diyala, gunmen in speeding car showered a check point manned by Sahwa, an anti-al-Qaida group, killing one and wounding two others, another police official said. The Sahwa are Sunni Arabs who joined forces with U.S. military to fight al-Qaida at the height of Iraq's insurgency. They have since been favorite targets for Sunni insurgents who consider them as traitors.

Also in Diyala, a roadside bomb targeted a passing police patrol in the town of Khan Bani Saad, killing a civilian bystander and wounding two policemen, the officer said. The town is about 35 kilometers (20 miles) north of Baghdad.

In the northern city of Mosul, a parked car bomb went off near a house of a Sunni lawmaker, wounding five bystanders. The lawmaker, a woman, was unharmed, another police officer said. Mosul is 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad.

Five other civilians were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near an Iraqi military base in the town of Taji, 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Baghdad, a police officer said.

Three health officials confirmed the causality figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Get Better Dental Care With These Great Tips - Health and Fitness ...

It can be very hard for people who are afraid of dentists to get the dental care they need. Taking good care of your teeth should be easy once you have the right information. By following the advice presented here, you will soon be headed in the right direction.

If you cannot afford dental work, see if your dentist will let you pay in installments. Often dentists offer a direct payment plan or offer the option of using a financing company. This is a good way to break the cost down into affordable chunks.

To maintain healthy teeth, get plenty of calcium. Many foods such as cheese, yogurt and milk are loaded with calcium. If you dislike eating high-calcium foods, you should think about taking a daily calcium supplement pill.

The heads on your electric toothbrush must be change every two months. The bristles can get worn out from use and the result is decreased performance in effective brushing. Your brush should also be switched out regularly because of bacteria concerns.

You should try to select healthy snacks whenever possible to cut down on the amount of damage to your teeth. When you don?t, brush your teeth soon to rid your mouth of excess sugar. By doing so, you are making yourself less susceptible to developing cavities.

Go see your dentist regularly to have your teeth cleaned and inspected. If you don?t see the dentist regularly, you could have serious problems down the road. By going to see your dentist routinely, you will be able to have any problems fixed before they get too bad.

Clean your toothbrush regularly. Thoroughly rinse your toothbrush when you are finished. Employ a vertically standing toothbrush holder to keep the head of the toothbrush from coming in contact with other things. Do not keep toothbrushes inside containers to avoid bacteria. Change out your toothbrush regularly.

Do not always believe what your dentist says. For instance, if he tells you that you are in need of a deep cleaning, seek out another opinion to make sure. Deep cleanings are very expensive, so it is important to ensure that you really need it. Your dentist could be suggesting that you need it simply because he wants your money.

If you have not done so yet, you should work hard now to make it a priority to properly care for your teeth. Develop a comprehensive and efficient dental care regimen you can apply on a daily basis. Apply everything you?ve learned from this article.

High Intensity vs Endurance | Josh Maher's Blog

I read this study over on the Journal of Obesity ? The Effect of High-Intensity Intermittent Exercise on Body Composition of Overweight Young Males and it got me thinking about personalities and trading vs investing. It is revealing that the High Intensity workouts that are being made popular by Crossfit,?4 Hour Body, P90x, The Biggest Loser, etc.?are the kind of workouts that show quick results and burn a lot of fat. It is also interesting that a dabble into day trading with the right methods also show quick results and increase bank accounts.

What is more revealing though is that these high intensity workouts are not usually sustained over a longer period of time. It is easy to join Crossfit or start doing P90x and burn through all the fat, but once the majority of the fat is burned the obvious need to stick with the program goes away and the participant is left with a lack of knowledge of how to maintain an enduring healthy lifestyle. This results in a cycle of high intensity workouts, lulls of activity, and high intensity workouts in the same way that the diet industry has created a cycle of diet, indulgence, diet. There is a lack of focus on enduring the lifestyle change in favor of a more efficient route to fast results.

The same is true for investing and trading. I personally have done the day trading thing, watched the S&P 500 futures market go up and down and make trades based on technical indicators. This is actually a great way to make money. I have done the same with the 3x ETF such as $TNA, $FAZ, etc. also a great way to make money. Although the rapid effectiveness or upside of this type of trading has fewer and fewer similarities with high intensity workouts as the downside risks are a lot lower for trading than they are for overworking your body. What is interesting though are the similarities?

If you think about it, good value investing is a lot like good endurance excercise. There is a focus on the details, an understanding of the factors involved, an appreciation that small decisions will have a long running impact, and a general lack distraction caused by interim behaviors. This is drastically different than the short term goals that come about in day trading and high intensity workouts.

Focusing on details of endurance running is all about the details of the form, do you need your foot to land differently on different terrain and if it does, what is the corresponding modifications to the rest of your form (back, butt, etc.). I find that what make the difference between a great long run and crappy long run is the difference in what details I am worrying about. If there are cars and lots of painful sharp rocks that I need to avoid I feel like the run was kind of crappy.

Similarly an Real Estate?investment where I have to worry about the light bulbs going out or the tenant actually paying the electric bill is a crappy tenant and crappy investment experience. The same holds true for equity investments. If I make an equity investment and the company is churning a lot (e.g. $IGOI) I get frustrated with the investment. I worry about the new website launch that SUCKS, I worry about the shitty deal with Shaq (I haven?t seen Shaq anywhere explaining the vampire power problem), I worry about the mediocre partnership with brightstar.

The important thing here is that when going on an endurance run or making an investment you need to have a plan for focusing on?the details?because in the end all of these details are what make the run or investment a good one.

?

Understanding the variables that will come into play over the course of the run? fatigue, the hill at mile 20, the ongoing calorie problem, hydration, etc. are important to understand. Just like the details ? these variables will creep in and suprise you over time. If you are getting a cramp for example, you likely weren?t hydrating properly to start with and will hopefully know better next time.

Understanding those variables in an investment can be more difficult, but they are just as important. Knowing how the Chevron refinery will affect oil and gas prices and therefore the shipping of goods that your investment is depending on is important. Not because you need to personally plan for what you?ll do when the cogs goes up for the Amazon on Prime accounts due to the gas/shipping price increase ? but because you need to see if Amazon is planning for those things and therefore demonstrating expertise in their business.

As an investor it is important to see that landscape of variables from private and public sources that will affect business and determine if the managers of that investment have a clear grasp on them. If they don?t ? you can simply think of your investment as planning to go for a 30 mile run without food or water and expecting to have no problems.

Making decisions is a never ending topic of discussion. How people make decisions, what part of the brain is used, etc. etc. I even have a post on the topic that I put together after reading Daniel Kahneman?s Thinking Fast and Slow (Highly recommend this book by the way). Decisions during an endurance?run are important and difficult. The reason they are difficult is that your mind and body are working on running and your adrenaline is at a higher than normal level. You can easily sustain small to moderate injuries on a run without even noticing due to this physiological difference in how your body is operating. This of course makes it harder to make decisions about the course (keep running next to the exhaust fumes or try to navigate an unknown trail), about your personal ability, and about your condition.

The hard part about investments is that when they start to lose money an investor has to make a decision. Has the thesis on the investment changed and if it has should I close the position? This is true on building products, building startups, investing in markets, or investing in Real Estate and with all of these it is hard to make decisions due to the emotions and time that have previously been spent on the investment. Just like during an endurance run, these mental and physical factors cloud the decision making process and make it harder to make the decisions.

Experience and reflection are critical factors in building these decision making capabilities. The ability to recognize situations and make decisions quickly only comes with both of these. The

Short term influences are pretty varied when endurance running, in fact today I was out for a ten mile run on my way to my son?s soccer game. I took a wrong turn because I couldn?t run down a particular street I thought I would be able to and got a little lost. My ten mile run got a little longer (I think I added an extra mile or so), the point is though that my pace slowed down due to the confusion and I started to get frustrated with being late to my son?s match.

The same holds true for investments in businesses for the long term. There will be many short term influences from economic influences to market influences that will change the appearance of value or strategy. The long term investor needs to focus on what the overall strategy is and whether or not the management team can acheive those despite the short term influences. I still made it to my son?s game today, a little later than I had planned, but arrived and watched the win. The same holds true for many of the investments I have made when the team held on despite those short term influences and moved to the end goal.
