Boston's gay pride parade last year and this month's bombings at the city's marathon helped persuade Jason Collins it was the time to come out as the first gay player in one of North America's top professional leagues.

Collins, a former centre with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Boston Celtics, said in a Sports Illustrated article published today that he had gradually become frustrated with having to keep silent on gay issues.

"I realised I needed to go public when Joe Kennedy, my old room-mate at Stanford and now a Massachusetts congressman, told me he had just marched in Boston's 2012 Gay Pride Parade," Collins said in the SI article, which he co-wrote with a journalist from the magazine.

Joe Kennedy is the grandson of the late Robert F Kennedy, younger brother of former president John F Kennedy.

"I'm seldom jealous of others, but hearing what Joe had done filled me with envy. I was proud of him for participating, but angry that as a closeted gay man, I couldn't even cheer my straight friend on as a spectator," he said.

"If I'd been questioned, I would have concocted half truths. What a shame to have to lie at a celebration of pride.

"I want to do the right thing and not hide anymore. I want to march for tolerance, acceptance and understanding.

"I want to take a stand and say, 'Me, too'."

Collins, who was traded from the Celtics to the Washington Wizards in February and is now a free agent, waited until the 2012-2013 regular season ended earlier this month to make his announcement. He said he had not come out earlier due to a desire to protect his team.

"Loyalty to my team is the real reason I didn't come out sooner. When I signed a free-agent contract with Boston last July, I decided to commit myself to the Celtics and not let my personal life become a distraction.

"When I was traded to the Wizards, the political significance of coming out sunk in. I was ready to open up to the press, but I had to wait until the season was over.

"A college classmate tried to persuade me to come out then and there, but I couldn't yet. My one small gesture of solidarity was to wear jersey number 98 with the Celtics and then the Wizards.

"The number has great significance to the gay community," he said, referring to the 1998 murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard.

"When I put on my jersey, I was making a statement to myself, my family and my friends."

Boston bombing

The 34-year-old Collins had already come out to his family and close friends, but said the bombing at the April 15 Boston Marathon, which killed three people and injured more than 200, had pushed him to make his announcement.

"The recent Boston Marathon bombing re-inforced the notion that I shouldn't wait for the circumstances of my coming out to be perfect. Things can change in an instant, so why not live truthfully?

"When I told Joe a few weeks ago that I was gay, he was grateful that I trusted him. He asked me to join him in 2013. We'll be marching on June 8," he said, of this year's Boston gay pride parade.

Collins also said that he found it very tough to keep out of the public debates about gay marriage in the United States.

"The strain of hiding my sexuality became almost unbearable in March, when the US Supreme Court heard arguments for and against same-sex marriage. Less then three miles from my apartment, nine jurists argued about my happiness and my future.

"Here was my chance to be heard and I couldn't say a thing. I didn't want to answer questions and draw attention to myself, not while I was still playing," he said.

A two-time NBA finalist, Collins said he was ready to sit down and talk with other players, but already felt happier now he had come out publicly.

"Openness may not completely disarm prejudice, but it's a good place to start. It all comes down to education.

"I'll sit down with any player who's uneasy about my coming out. Being gay is not a choice. This is the tough road and at times the lonely road.

"If I'm up against an intolerant player, I'll set a pretty hard pick on him. And then move on.

"The most you can do is stand up for what you believe in. I'm much happier since coming out to my friends and family.

"Being genuine and honest makes me happy."

Regulator tells Heathrow airport to cut charges

By Rhys Jones

LONDON (Reuters) - London's Heathrow Airport must cut the fees it charges airlines to reduce the substantial market power it has built up, the industry's regulator said on Tuesday, in a move which could lead to lower air fares for travellers.

The UK's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said Heathrow, the world's third busiest airport in terms of passenger numbers, should cut take off and landing charges by inflation minus 1.3 percent between 2014 and 2019.

Controlled by Spanish infrastructure group Ferrovial, Heathrow's 2012 profits rose 12 percent to 1.3 billion pounds in February largely driven by an increase in the fees it charges airlines, its largest source of revenue.

Earlier this year Heathrow, which has raised airport tariffs by an average of 12.5 percent since April 2011, said it should be allowed to increase charges by 5.9 percent each year in real terms between 2014 and 2019.

This would see the fees, which are passed on to passengers by airlines, rising to 27.30 pounds per person from the current 19.33 pounds.

However, the CAA said on Tuesday it had "found clear evidence of substantial market power" at Heathrow and "after a decade when prices have risen ... is now looking to encourage further investment whilst improving value for passengers in other ways."

Heathrow, which has invested 11 billion pounds over the last ten years in new terminals and facilities, argues that it needs to raise charges to help it better compete with rival hubs such as Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt and Dubai.

Willie Walsh, the chief executive of British Airways parent IAG, said the proposals did not go far enough however.

"Heathrow airport is over-priced, over-rewarded and inefficient and these proposals, which will result in an increase in prices, fail to address this situation," the head of the largest airline at Heathrow said in a statement.

The CAA said charges at London's second largest airport, GIP-owned Gatwick, should rise by inflation plus 1 percent for the five years from April 2014, despite Gatwick's calls for the removal of what it calls the "regulatory barriers to growth".

At London's Stansted airport the CAA said it would move away from setting a five year fixed price cap, and instead introduce a price monitoring regime.

Stansted, which is predominantly a low-cost leisure and holiday airport, is based 50 kilometres northeast of central London, and was bought by Manchester Airports Group last month.

The CAA will make a final decision on whether to apply its recommendations in January 2014.

Are lesbians more accepted than gay men? | The Salt Lake Tribune

ADVANCE FOR USE SUNDAY, APRIL 28, 2013 AND THEREAFTER - Sarah Toce, editor of a daily online news magazine "The Seattle Lesbian," poses for a photo Friday, April 19, 2013, in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, in an alleyway that has been the site of fights and other violence against gay men. Even as society has become more accepting of homosexuality overall, longstanding research has shown more societal tolerance for lesbians than gay men, and that gay men are significantly more likely to be targets of violence. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)

Society ? Research shows more societal tolerance for lesbians, and gay men face more violence.

Chicago ? It may be a man?s world, as the saying goes, but lesbians seem to have an easier time living in it than gay men do.

High-profile lesbian athletes have come out while still playing their sports, but not a single gay male athlete in major U.S. professional sports has done the same. While television?s most prominent same-sex parents are the two fictional dads on "Modern Family," surveys show that society is actually more comfortable with the idea of lesbians parenting children.

And then there is the ongoing debate over the Boy Scouts of America proposal to ease their ban on gay leaders and scouts.

Reaction to the proposal, which the BSA?s National Council will take up next month, has been swift, and often harsh. Yet amid the discussions, the Girl Scouts of USA reiterated their policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, among other things. That announcement has gone largely unnoticed.

Certainly, the difference in the public?s reaction to the scouting organizations can be attributed, in part, to their varied histories, including the Boy Scouts? longstanding religious ties and a base that has become less urban over the years, compared with the Girl Scouts?.

But there?s also an undercurrent here, one that?s often present in debates related to homosexuality, whether over the military?s now-defunct "Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell" policy or even same-sex marriage. Even as society has become more accepting of homosexuality overall, longstanding research has shown more societal tolerance for lesbians than gay men, and that gay men are significantly more likely to be targets of violence.

That research also has found that it?s often straight men who have the most difficult time with homosexuality ? and particularly gay men ? says researcher Gregory Herek.

"Men are raised to think they have to prove their masculinity, and one big part about being masculine is being heterosexual. So we see that harassment, jokes, negative statements and violence are often ways that even younger men try to prove their heterosexuality," says Herek, a psychologist at the University of California, Davis, who has, for years, studied this phenomenon and how it plays out in the gay community.

That is not, of course, to downplay the harassment lesbians face. It can be just as ugly.

But it?s not as frequent, Herek and others have found, especially in adulthood. It?s also not uncommon for lesbians to encounter straight men who have a fascination with them.

story continues below

"The men hit on me. The women hit on me. But I never feel like I?m in any immediate danger," says Sarah Toce, the 29-year-old editor of The Seattle Lesbian and managing editor of The Contributor, both online news magazines. "If I were a gay man, I might ? and if it?s like this in Seattle, can you imagine what it is like in less-accepting parts of middle America?"

One of Herek?s studies found that, overall, 38 percent of gay men said that, in adulthood, they?d been victims of vandalism, theft or violence ? hit, beaten or sexually assaulted ? because they were perceived as gay. About 13 percent of lesbians said the same.

A separate study of young people in England also found that, in their teens, gay boys and lesbians were almost twice as likely to be bullied as their straight peers. By young adulthood, it was about the same for lesbians and straight girls. But in this study, published recently in the journal Pediatrics, gay young men were almost four times more likely than their straight peers to be bullied.

At least one historian says it wasn?t always that way for either men or women, whose "expressions of love" with friends of the same gender were seen as a norm ? even idealized ? in the 19th century.

"These relationships offered ample opportunity for those who would have wanted to act on it physically, even if most did not," says Thomas Foster, associate professor and head of the history department at DePaul University in Chicago.

Today?s "code of male gendered behavior," he says, often rejects these kinds of expressions between men.

We joke about the "bro-mance" ? a term used to describe close friendships between straight men. But in some sense, the humor stems from the insinuation that those relationships could be romantic, though everyone assumes they aren?t.

Call those friends "gay," a word that?s still commonly used as an insult, and that?s quite another thing. Consider the furor over Rutgers University men?s basketball coach Mike Rice, who was recently fired for mistreating his players and mocking them with gay slurs.

If two women dance together at a club or walk arm-in-arm down the street, people are usually less likely to question it ? though some wonder if that has more to do with a lack of awareness than acceptance.

"Lesbians are so invisible in our society. And so I think the hatred is more invisible," says Laura Grimes, a licensed clinical social worker in Chicago whose counseling practice caters to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender clients.

Grimes says she also frequently hears from lesbians who are harassed for "looking like dykes," meaning that people are less accepting if they look more masculine.

Still, Ian O?Brien, a gay man in Washington, D.C., sees more room for women "to transcend what femininity looks like, or at least negotiate that space a little bit more."

Todd Akin On 'Legitimate Rape' Comments: 'Of Course' I Regret Them (VIDEO)

Nearly six months removed from a failed U.S. Senate run, former Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) is expressing remorse for his controversial "legitimate rape" comments.

In an interview with KSDK-TV aired Thursday night, Akin was asked whether he regretted making those statements.

"Of course," Akin replied. "Of course you regret it. You think what it would have been like if I hadn't done that."

Incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) handily defeated Akin by more than 15 percentage points in their November 2012 race. One contributing factor to his demise was the infamous Aug. 19, 2012 KTVI-TV interview, where he claimed that victims of "legitimate rape" rarely get pregnant.

"From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," Akin said. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist."

Immediate backlash ensued, with Republicans urging Akin to drop out of the Senate race. But he chose to stay in, vowing in an Aug. 21 radio interview that he was around "for the long haul."

"I misspoke one word in one sentence on one day, and all of a sudden, overnight, everybody decides, 'Well, Akin can't possibly win,'" he said in a separate interview hosted by Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, the Associated Press reported. "Well, I don't agree with that."

Akin reflected on that element of the campaign Thursday night as well, detailing the pressure that was coming from both the party and the people. In the end, he stuck with the latter.

"There was a very, very strong grassroots element saying don't you give in to those party bosses," Akin told KSDK. "You stay in there and you keep fighting."

Akin's fighting spirit could result in a political return someday. He is not ruling "anything out," adding Thursday that any future decisions would depend "on the circumstances."

Poor parenting -- including overprotection -- increases bullying risk

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Children who are exposed to negative parenting -- including abuse, neglect but also overprotection -- are more likely to experience childhood bullying by their peers, according to a meta-analysis of 70 studies of more than 200,000 children.

The research, led by the University of Warwick and published in the journal Child Abuse & Neglect, found the effects of poor parenting were stronger for children who are both a victim and perpetrator of bulling (bully-victims) than children who were solely victims.

It found that negative or harsh parenting was linked to a moderate increase in the risk of being a 'bully-victim' and a small increase in the risk of being a victim of bullying. In contrast, warm but firm parenting reduced the risk of being bullied by peers.

The study authors, Professor Dieter Wolke, Dr Suzet Lereya and Dr Muthanna Samara, called for anti-bullying intervention programmes to extend their focus beyond schools to focus on positive parenting within families and to start before children enter school.

Professor Wolke said: "The long shadow of bullying falls well beyond the school playground -- it has lasting and profound effects into adulthood.

"We know that victims and bully-victims are more likely to develop physical health problems, suffer from anxiety and depression and are also at increased risk of self-harm and suicide.

"It is vital we understand more about the factors linked to bullying in order to reduce the burden it places on the affected children and society.

"People often assume bullying is a problem for schools alone but it's clear from this study that parents also have a very important role to play.

"We should therefore target intervention programmes not just in schools but also in families to encourage positive parenting practices such as warmth, affection, communication and support."

The study categorised behaviours such as abuse/neglect, maladaptive parenting and overprotection as negative parenting behaviour.

It categorised authoritative parenting, parent-child communication, parental involvement and support, supervision and warmth and affection as positive parenting behaviours.

Professor Wolke highlighted the finding that overprotection was linked to an increased risk of bullying.

"Although parental involvement, support and high supervision decrease the chances of children being involved in bullying, for victims overprotection increased this risk.

"Children need support but some parents try to buffer their children from all negative experiences.

"In the process, they prevent their children from learning ways of dealing with bullies and make them more vulnerable.

"It could be that children with overprotective parents may not develop qualities such as autonomy and assertion and therefore may be easy targets for bullies.

"But it could also be that parents of victims become overprotective of their children.

"In either case, parents cannot sit on the school bench with their children.

"Parenting that includes clear rules about behaviour while being supportive and emotionally warm is most likely to prevent victimisation.

"These parents allow children to have some conflicts with peers to learn how to solve them rather than intervene at the smallest argument."

Asia stocks fall after China production slips

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Tuesday after China's manufacturing growth slowed in April, adding to worries about the health of the world's second-largest economy.

A preliminary survey by HSBC Corp. said its monthly purchasing managers' index fell to a worse-than-expected 50.5 from March's 51.6 on a 100-point scale. That comes on top of data released last week that showed an unexpected slowdown in China's first-quarter economic growth.

"It builds on that picture last week and fears of a moderating growth scenario in China," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney. "That set a negative tone."

Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.2 percent to 21,773.72. Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index tumbled 2.1 percent to 2,194.12. The Shenzhen Composite Index lost 2.2 percent to 928.24.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei index slipped as the yen gained ground against the dollar. The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo fell 0.1 percent to 13,548.76. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia also fell. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.9 percent to 5,010.20.

European stocks rose Monday in response to the re-election Saturday of Giorgio Napolitano as president of recession-mired Italy. He can now dissolve Parliament and call new elections, something he could not do in the final months of his first term. The country has been hobbled by political gridlock after inconclusive elections in February.

However, Michael Hewson, senior market analyst at CMC Markets in London, suggested in a commentary that Napolitano's selection by parliament reflected Italy's political chaos and the inability of its lawmakers to agree on a candidate apart from the incumbent who was planning to retire.

"Despite the optimism the inescapable fact remains that it is a sad state of affairs when an 87 year old man has to stand for re-election in an attempt to try and move the country forward."

Among individual stocks, Australia's Woodside Petroleum shot up 9.6 percent after the oil and gas company announced a special dividend and increased its dividend payout ratio after cutting a major LNG project.

Virgin Australia Holdings jumped 4.6 percent after the airline received approval from Australia's competition regulator for a takeover of budget rival Tiger Airways.

Wall Street posted modest advances Monday after energy stocks got a lift from recovering oil prices. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.1 percent to close at 14,567.17. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.5 percent, to 1,562.50. The Nasdaq composite gained 0.9 percent, to 3,233.55.

Investors are now turning their focus to company profits. About a third of the companies in the S&P 500 index, including Exxon Mobil and Apple, will report earnings this week. Of the companies that have reported earnings so far, 67 percent have exceeded analysts' expectations..

Benchmark oil for June delivery was down 51 cents to $88.68 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract for May gained 75 cents to close at $88.76 on the Nymex on Monday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3043 from $1.3060 late Monday in New York. The dollar fell to 98.78 yen from 99.42 yen.

Woman in Hugh Jackman NYC stalking case indicted

NEW YORK (AP) ? A woman accused of stalking Hugh Jackman and throwing a razor at him has been indicted by a New York City grand jury.

The New York Post reports (http://bit.ly/11oD5xr) Kathleen Thurston appeared briefly in Manhattan Criminal Court on Friday. The charges remain sealed until Thurston's next court date May 8.

Police say Thurston pulled out a razor filled with hair and threw it at the "X-Men" star when he was working out in a gym in the West Village neighborhood Sunday. They say the Bakersfield, Calif., native then fled and was arrested several blocks away. Jackman wasn't hurt.

Police had charged Thurston with stalking and other charges.

Legal Aid lawyer Liz Beal tells the newspaper she's trying to figure out whether Thurston is mentally fit for trial.

(AP) ? Adam Scott barely had time to think about an Australian in a green jacket when a sudden roar from the 18th green and a quick look at the TV reminded him it's never been easy. Not for him in the majors. And certainly not for the Aussies at Augusta National.

He thought for a second it was over when he made a 20-foot birdie putt, the kind that always wins the Masters. In the scoring room, one last cheer on a soggy Sunday caused Scott to look up at the television after Angel Cabrera produced a great shot of his own, a 7-iron to 3 feet for birdie to force a playoff.

Not again.

"The golf gods can't be this cruel to Australia," Greg Norman, the symbol of heartache at Augusta, said in a text to friends who were watching nervously.

Scott knocked in a 12-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to win that green jacket, personal redemption for his own failure last summer in the British Open and an end to more than a half-century of Australian misery at the Masters.

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!

"We like to think we're the best at everything. Golf is a big sport at home, and this is the one thing in golf we hadn't been able to achieve," Scott said. "It's amazing that it's my destiny to be the first Australian to win. It's incredible."

Halfway around the world on Monday morning, commuters cheered on buses going into Brisbane, the capital of Scott's home state of Queensland. A speech by the prime minister was interrupted to give an update on the playoff.

The celebration was sweet, especially for the 32-year-old Scott.

It was only last summer when Scott threw away the British Open by making bogey on his last four holes to lose by one shot to Ernie Els. He handled that wrenching defeat with dignity and pledged to finish stronger if given another chance. "Next time ? I'm sure there will be a next time ? I can do a better job of it," he said that day.

Scott was close to perfect, and he had to be with Cabrera delivering some brilliance of his own.

Moments after Scott made his clutch birdie on the 18th hole for a 3-under 69 to take a one-shot lead ? "C'mon, Aussie!" he screamed ? Cabrera answered with one of the greatest shots under the circumstances, setting up an easy birdie and a 2-under 70. They finished at 9-under 279.

They both chipped close for par on the 18th in the first playoff hole, and Cabrera's 15-foot birdie putt on the 10th grazed the right side of the cup. Scott his 6-iron into about 12 feet, leaving him one putt away from a green jacket.

Under darkening clouds ? no sudden-death playoff at the Masters had ever gone more than two holes ? Scott said he could barely read the putt. That's when he called over caddie Steve Williams and asked him to take over. Williams was on the bag for 13 of Tiger Woods' majors, and read the putt that helped Woods to the 1999 PGA Championship.

"I said, 'Do you think it's just more than a cup?' He said, 'It's at least two cups. It's going to break more than you think,' " Scott said. "He was my eyes on that putt."

"The winning putt might be the highlight putt of my career," Williams said. "Because he asked me to read it."

With that long putter anchored to his chest, the putt was pure. The Masters had been the only major that never had a champion use a long putter. Scott's win means four of the last six major champions used a putter pressed against their belly or chest, a stroke that might be banned in 2016.

What mattered more to Scott was that the Masters had been the only major an Australian had never won. He was among dozens of golfers who routinely rose in the early hours of Monday morning for the telecast, only to watch a horror show. The leading character was Norman, who had four good chances to win, none better than when he blew a six-shot lead on the last day to Nick Faldo in 1996.

There was also Jim Ferrier in 1952 and Bruce Crampton 20 years later. Scott and Jason Day tied for second just two years ago. Norman, though, was the face of Aussie failures at the Masters, and Scott paid him tribute in Butler Cabin before he slipped on that beautiful green jacket.

"Australia is a proud sporting nation, and this is one notch in the belt we never got," Scott said. "It's amazing that it came down to me today. But there's one guy who inspired a nation of golfers, and that's Greg Norman. He's been incredible to me and all the great golfers. Part of this belongs to him."

Reached at his home in south Florida, Norman told The Associated Press, "I'm over the moon. Sitting there watching Adam, I had a tear in my eye. That's what it was all about. It was Adam doing it for himself, and for the country."

Norman was so nervous watching TV that he went to the gym when the final group made the turn. He headed home for the last four holes ? Day, Scott and Marc Leishman all had a chance to win ? and was texting with friends as his emotions shifted with every putt.

"I can only imagine how everyone else felt when I was playing," Norman said.

Scott was just as gracious in victory as he was last summer at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. He and Cabrera flashed a thumbs-up to each other after their shots into the 10th hole in the playoff, and they walked off the 10th green with their arms around each other when it was over.

"Such is golf," Cabrera said. "Adam is a good winner."

It was a riveting conclusion to a week filled with several awkward moments. There was the one-shot penalty called against 14-year-old Guan Tianlang that nearly kept the Chinese teen from becoming the youngest player to make the cut. There was the illegal drop by Woods, who was given a two-shot penalty over questions and confusion about why he was not disqualified for signing an incorrect card.

And at the end, there was shot-making at its finest.

Scott didn't make a bogey after the first hole, and he really didn't miss a shot the rest of the day. He just couldn't get a putt to fall until it really mattered. Then, he made two of them.

Day closed with a 70, his second close call at the Masters in three years. This one hurt far more because he had a two-shot lead when he stepped to the 16th tee.

He ran off three bold birdies down the stretch ? getting up-and-down from the back bunker on the 13th, a 10-foot putt on the 14th, and capitalizing on a break at No. 15 when his drive ricocheted out of the trees into the fairways, allowing him to reach the green in two.

His lead vanished just as quickly, however. Day chose to hit putter from behind the 16th green, came up 5 feet short and missed the par putt. He hit into a bunker on the 17th for another bogey.

"I think the pressure got to me a little bit," Day said.

The tournament unfolded behind him, and it turned out to be quite a show.

Scott hit the ball beautifully the entire day and watched one putt after another turn away from the hole. But he also received perhaps the biggest break of the tournament when his shot into the par-5 13th spun back off the green and was headed down the slope into the tributary of Rae's Creek when it suddenly stopped, a blessing from a day spent in the rain. He got up-and-down for birdie, and he two-putted for birdie on the 15th.

Cabrera wasn't so fortunate. Playing in the group behind, his approach hit the bank and tumbled down into the water, leading to a bogey that cost him the lead. Cabrera answered with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 16th, however, that gave him a share of the lead.

And then came a one-two punch of birdies. For the fans who endured a soggy final round, this made up for it.

Two players. Two clutch birdies. Two different celebrations.

Scott screamed at the top of his lungs and clapped hands forcefully with his caddie after his 20-foot birdie putt curled around the left side of the cup ? just like Phil Mickelson's winning putt in 2004 ? and dropped in the back.

Cabrera, going after a third major championship, started walking when he hit his 7-iron from 163 yards and pumped his left fist when it landed and the gallery erupted. He affectionately hugged his son and caddie, Angel Jr., as they walked off the green toward the scoring room.

"It was a split second I thought I'd won," Scott said. "That was the putt we've seen so many guys make to win, and what I thought is it's time for me to step up and see how much I want this. To make a couple putts to win the Masters is just an amazing feeling."

For Woods, it was another one that got away.

Not even that two-shot penalty on Friday ? the product of a wedge that hit the flag and caromed back into the water ? would have mattered. Woods figured he would need a round of 65 to win, and he made two bogeys before his first birdie. Even a mild charge on the back nine wasn't going to help him, and he closed with a 70 to tie for fourth with Marc Leishman (72).

"I played well," Woods said. "Unfortunately, I didn't make enough putts."

He now has gone eight years without winning the Masters, and he has been stuck on 14 majors since the 2008 U.S. Open. Woods is 0-for-15 in the majors since then, a drought Jack Nicklaus never endured until he was 44.

Brandt Snedeker, tied with Cabrera for the lead going into the final round, closed with a 75 and finished five shots behind.

"Any time you have a chance to win the Masters and you don't come through ? my lifelong dream ? you're going to be upset, you're going to cry," Snedeker said. "But I'll get through it."

He could learn from Scott, who endured a collapse that might have scarred a lesser player for a lot longer than nine months.

Verizon may follow T-Mobile?s lead with creative smartphone payment plans [update]

By Matthew Green HYDERABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - When Veero Kolhi made the asset declaration required of candidates for Pakistan's May elections, she listed the following items: two beds, five mattresses, cooking pots and a bank account with life savings of 2,800 rupees ($28). While she may lack the fortune that is the customary entry ticket to Pakistani politics, Kolhi can make a claim that may resonate more powerfully with poor voters than the wearily familiar promises of her rivals. ...

Five Jobs That Didn't Exist 10 Years Ago - Business Insider

Can you imagine a world without Facebook, iPhoneapps, civil partnerships and the reimagined Doctor Who? That was Britain in 2003 ? a time before people poked each other without fear of anyone pressing charges or trolled celebrities on Twitter. It was also a time when some of the jobs being advertised today simply didn't exist.

Research by website Genes Reunited put the spotlight on a range of roles that existed in the 1800s and 1900s, including leech collector, toad doctor and royal rat catcher, which are thankfully no longer seen in the situations vacant column. But you don't have to go back that far to recognise the shifting sands ? careers pages now feature a whole selection of jobs that didn't exist just a decade ago (in the UK, at least).

Here are five, together with the lowdown on what you might need to qualify for the role.

    Offshore windfarm engineer

The first offshore windfarm ? North Hoyle ? came online in December 2003 and the UK now has one of the largest offshore windfarms in the world, in Greater Gabbard. The London Array being constructed in the outer Thames estuary is expected to become one of the world's largest offshore windfarms ? creating plenty of work for windfarm engineers.

There are currently 48 wind-related roles being offered through employment website Adzuna, 41% of which are offshore, with an average advertised salary of ?38,625. This is 11% more than the average paid to onshore windfarm engineers.

What you need to do the job:

? Accredited degree in civil and/or structural engineering

    ? Marine specialisation a bonus

? A high level of understanding of structures, geotechnics and marine loading is required

    ? Offshore wind energy experience

    ? Construction experience

    Zumba teacher

Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance-fitness program founded in 2001, but it didn't salsa its way to the UK until years later.

There is no prescribed route to a career in dance and many Zumba teachers do not have any specialised education. Instead, they must attend a Zumba Fitness instructor training course (Zumba basic steps level 1 or jump start gold), costing between ?180 and ?200. To keep their licence teachers must attend a set number of courses offered by the Zumba Academy. A quick search of Zumba.com found 11 introductory Zumba classes on offer across the UK.

Adzuna says the average salary is ?17,491. Before Zumba, teachers would no doubt be holding classes in any number of aerobics or dance styles.

What you need to do the job:

    ? Essential skills/experience

    ? Sports/fitness experience

    App designer

App developers tend to be split between user experience architects (UEAs) and visual designers, though some may do both. A UEA will plan all aspects of how a user will navigate their way through an app, while a visual designer will create the look and feel of it.

UEAs usually have a graphic design or a psychology background, but also have a keen interest in technology. Visual designers mainly come from graphic or web design courses.

Trisha Patel, head of creative at app design firm Grapple, says: "To transfer into a career in mobile design, graduates would need to demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of designing for a smaller screen, and the ability to apply strategic thinking specific to mobile, such as touch screen considerations."

Patel adds that today's app developer would probably have been working as a web developer 10 years ago, building desktop applications, webpages or infrastructure systems.

Graduates with Objective-C (the language used to code iPhone apps) knowledge are able to demand starting salaries of ?44,327. This is 23% higher than the average technical graduate job, according to Adzuna.

What you need to do the job:

    ? Strong proficiency in Objective-C

? NS Operation, Grand Central Dispatch and Blocks Networking using NSURL Connection, knowledge of CoreLocation, UIKit, MapKit, Security, CoreData, CoreGraphics, CoreAnimation and UIWebView

? Experience in XML and JSON-based application development

? Great understanding of iOS memory management, both automatic and manual reference counting

    Green Deal assessor

The Green Deal allows consumers to make energy-saving improvements to their home or business without having to pay all the costs upfront. An assessor visits people's properties to assess and make recommendations for energy-saving improvements. They must have the technical knowledge and skills to provide consumers with the best advice, meeting requirements set out in the National Occupational Standards for Green Deal advisors.

Companies started taking on Green Deal assessors in 2012 to begin assessments from 1 October 2012. There are currently 38 jobs advertised at Adzuna, with average pay of ?24,070. Nearly a quarter of them are based in north-west England.

Ten years ago, today's Green Deal assessors would probably have worked as building or property surveyors. Five years ago they might even have been ill-fated home information pack (Hip) surveyors. Hips were almost entirely phased out in 2010.

What you need to do the job:

? Full training and qualification as domestic energy assessor or Green Deal assessor (GDA)

? An excellent knowledge and understanding of energy services products and /or a willingness and ability to learn in detail a broad product portfolio

? Excellent IT and numeracy skills

? Knowledge of energy regulations related to quality and compliance

    Social media manager

A social media manager is generally responsible for all social media activity carried out by a company, including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram and others.

They will often delegate this work and focus more on strategy, designing plans to increase a firm's profile and manage how consumers interact and engage with the brand. It is an important role: get it wrong and you can alienate the very customers you are trying to woo; while stories of Twitter errors are legion.

This is a hot sector, with 1,066 social media jobs currently being advertised in the UK on Adzuna, 177 of which are social media manager positions commanding an average salary of ?30,086. However, Adzuna says this advertised average has decreased by 9% in the past six months.

Five years ago, today's social media manager would probably have been operating elsewhere within a corporate PR, marketing or advertising department.

What you need to do the job:

? University degree in relevant field or equivalent work experience

? Substantial hands-on experience of managing and growing online communities

? Proven track record in producing and commissioning content for social media channels

? Passion for, and knowledge of, digital trends and new media

? Extensive experience of managing and growing online communities

? Excellent knowledge of social media channels, particularly Facebook, Twitter and YouTube

Did your job exist 10 years ago ? if not, how did you end up doing it? Will it still be around in 100 years, or will it look as antiquated as the role of leech collector?
