Yahoo! Becomes Exclusive Partner Of 49ers Online Content

49ers stadiumI get as excited as anyone thinking about the upcoming 49ers season. Quite a bit has happened since we were 5 years from winning the Super Bowl. The stadium was branded with the Levi?s logo, we got Anquan Boldin from the Ravens for pretty much nothing, and Michael Crabtree suffered a hefty injury. Yahoo!, while on a purchasing spree of startups, decided to align themselves with SF?s most beloved football team (sorry Raider fans) by inking a 10 year deal that makes them the 49ers exclusive partner for online digital content.

Barriers to homeownership dividing Britain, youth say -survey

LONDON (Reuters) - Most young Britons say rising barriers to home ownership are dividing the country socially and economically, and one in five has abandoned the dream of ever owning a property, a survey by mortgage provider Halifax said.

Over 70 percent of 8,051 survey respondents said the country was being split between those who could and those who couldn't buy a home, which in the long run could impact neighborhoods, families and the job market, the Lloyds Banking Group-owned lender said on Monday.

The respondents, aged between 25 and 40, said the effects included leaving their generation without sufficient resources for retirement, affecting social mobility and widening the country's wealth gap.

House prices rose steeply in Britain from the late 1990s until the global financial crisis broke in 2008, and they have been kept high by a combination of factors, including historically low interest rates and shared ownership schemes.

"Home ownership is clearly still an important goal for a lot of people, but fewer and fewer people consider it to be something they'll be able to achieve," said Halifax's Mortgages Director, Craig McKinlay.

"Renters say they never feel properly settled and fear they will struggle to retire, so the social impact of this shift is significant. More needs to be done to redress the balance, both through making homeownership more accessible and offering more stability through the rental sector."

The number of Britons renting privately is at its highest level since the 1990s at 22 million households, the survey said, with many unable to afford to buy a home due to the chunky deposits needed, a lack of mortgage loans and stagnant incomes.

Thirty-six percent of respondents said that they would like to buy a home but did not think they would ever be able to, the survey said.

Halifax also said that 70 percent of respondents did not believe, or were unsure that government plans to support homebuyers would help the market. In March, finance minister George Osborne announced plans to provide and guarantee billion of pounds in housing loans, which critics say could drive property prices higher still.

Housing Minister Mark Prisk said there had been 4,000 reservations under the guarantee scheme and urged others looking to buy a home to participate.

Free microchip events encourage safety among pet owners | Fox 59 ...

A line formed outside Ameriana Bank in Westfield Saturday, as pet owners showed up to get free microchips for their dogs and cats.

The Bank partners with the Humane Society for Hamilton County to put on the yearly event. It?s one of many free microchip events offered by local humane societies.

?It?s something that has to be done if you?re a pet owner,? Jennifer Judd, with Hamilton County Humane, said.

First in line was Stephanie Garst?s family from Arcadia. They made the thirty minute drive to get three dogs microchipped.

?She got loose last week and I was worrying all day whether she was gonna stay at home or take off on me,? Garst said of one of her dogs.

Garst knows firsthand what a microchip can do. She lost her old dog once and because he had a microchip, getting him home was a breeze.

?He was able to come straight back home within 12 hours,? Garst said.

Last month, Fox 59 highlighted a phenomenon called ?dog flipping,? where people falsely claim pets online and then resell them on Craigslist or other websites. One dog, Rosie, fell victim to the scam but with the help of strangers, was returned to her rightful owner who immediately had her microchipped.

?All too often we hear of pets being stolen or just lost and can?t be found, and with this microchip its an easy enough scan,? Rob Garrett with Ameriana Bank said.

Plus it?s an easy, nearly painless, process. It?s just like a shot and the microchip, the size of a grain of rice, embeds under the skin to later be scanned.

?I would definitely suggest it to anybody,? Garst said.

If you?d like to get a microchip for your own pet, visit your local humane society or check their website for free events like this one near you.

Cueto's return powers Reds past Brewers

updated 4:16 p.m. ET June 16, 2013

CINCINNATI (AP) - Solid pitching from Johnny Cueto was all the Cincinnati Reds were looking for on Sunday.

His deft work with the bat was a bonus.

Cueto pitched six solid innings and drove in a run with a perfect suicide-squeeze in his return to the rotation and Jay Bruce homered to lift the Reds over the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1.

Donald Lutz drove in two runs with a pinch-hit single, and Zack Cozart and Joey Votto each had two hits as Cincinnati rebounded after losing 6-0 on Saturday.

Cueto, activated from the disabled list Sunday, improved to 4-0 in his seventh start of the season. He allowed five hits and one run with three strikeouts and no walks as the Reds took two of three in the weekend series.

Cueto also eased the fears of manager Dusty Baker.

"We only had one worry with Johnny Cueto - was his (shoulder) OK," Baker said. "Other than that, we don't worry about Johnny Cueto."

Cueto made his first start since a 6-0 win at Pittsburgh on May 31. He was placed on the disabled list on June 5 for the second time this season because of a strained muscle in his right shoulder.

Alfredo Simon allowed two hits and had six strikeouts in three innings of relief for his first save of the season and second in two years with Cincinnati.

Simon, who struck out all six batters he faced in a two-inning effort against Atlanta on May 6, struck out the last five batters he faced on Sunday.

"My breaking ball and two-seamer were working really good," Simon said. "It was good to give our bullpen a rest."

Milwaukee starter Wily Peralta gave up all five Reds runs - four earned - in 5 1-3 innings. The slumping Peralta (4-8) fell to 1-6 in his last seven starts.

Carlos Gomez hit the first pitch he saw - and Cueto's seventh pitch - into the left-field seats for his 12th homer of the season to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead.

"In the first inning, I had too many thoughts," Cueto said through an interpreter. "I was thinking too much. Finally, it was over. When I got to the dugout, Cesar Izturis said, `Just do what you normally do. If it breaks again, we'll fix it."'

"Johnny hung a slider to Gomez," Baker said. "That was the only mistake he made."

The Reds tied it with an unearned run without benefit of a hit in the second. Xavier Paul led off with a walk, and Jack Hannahan followed with a chopper to second baseman Rickie Weeks, whose throw bounced past first baseman Juan Francisco for an error.

Hannahan was forced out, and Paul moved to third on Ryan Hanigan's grounder. Cueto drove in Paul, who broke for the plate on the pitch, with a suicide-squeeze bunt he said he didn't see.

"I thought it was going to hit me," Cueto said. "I closed my eyes."

Baker had no hesitation about flashing that signal.

"We have confidence in Johnny in almost everything," he said. "That was a situation where it was threatening to rain, and we wanted to get the lead before it rained."

Cozart led off the third with a double into the left-field corner, went to third on Votto's groundout, and scored the go-ahead run on Brandon Phillips's checked-swing chopper back to Peralta, who dropped the ball and had to scramble and settle for the out at first.

The Brewers couldn't afford such mistakes with the way Cueto was pitching, manager Ron Roenicke said.

"Defensively, we didn't play well," Roenicke said. "Offensively, we didn't have a lot of opportunities."

Bruce followed with his 12th homer, a 469-foot drive, that landed two-thirds of the way up the right-field seats. He was more impressed with Cueto's performance.

"That was very good," he said. "I think everybody at this point was holding their breath and hoping he could come out of the game feeling good," Bruce said. "It looks like he did. I'm glad today went well."

The Reds added two runs with one out in the sixth on Hannahan's walk, Hanigan's double off the left-field wall, and Lutz's pinch-hit single up the middle against Mike Gonzalez.

NOTES: The Reds optioned RHP Pedro Villareal to Triple-A Louisville to make room on the roster for Cueto. ... Reds OF Chris Heisey is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Monday. Heisey has been on the disabled list since April 29 with a strained right hamstring. ... Milwaukee RHP Marco Estrada is expected to throw a bullpen session Monday. Estrada has been on the disabled list since June 5 with a strained left hamstring ... The Reds will open their first home series against Central Division rival Pittsburgh. RHP Mike Leake (6-3) is scheduled to start Monday for Cincinnati. ... Milwaukee is off Monday before opening a three-game series in Houston. Alfredo Figaro (1-0) is scheduled to start on Tuesday.

(AP) ? About 1,000 protesters complaining about the high cost of staging the World Cup demonstrated in front of the National Stadium in Brasilia just hours before Brazil played Japan in the opening match of the Confederations Cup on Saturday.

Riot and mounted police were called in to keep demonstrators from getting too close to the stadium as thousands of fans arrived for the inaugural match in the nation's capital. The protesters started chanting and marching about a mile away from the venue.

Tear gas bombs were thrown by the police and pepper spray was used to try to control the protesters as they moved near the venue. Local media said police later shot rubber bullets to disperse the crowd and at least two people were injured, including a 16-year-old student. Authorities said 15 people were arrested.

The match was not disrupted by the protest and Brazil won 3-0 in front of a crowd of 67,423 people.

The protesters shouted against the local government and carried banners saying that too much money was being spent on the Confederations Cup and next year's World Cup while the majority of the population continued to struggle.

"We are demanding more respect to the population," said 21-year-old Vinicius de Assis, one of the protesters. "They are building these overpriced stadiums and are not worrying about the situation of their own people."

The demonstrators also shouted against FIFA, saying that soccer's governing body doesn't have the right to make demands on the Brazilian government. "FIFA, go away," they chanted.

The protesters also said they are being excluded from the tournaments because of the high prices of match tickets.

"This is a shame, this is our money that they used for these tournaments," said demonstrator Jaisson Peres. "Millions and millions spent and we don't get anything in return."

They held banners and signs reading "Health? Education? No! Here everything is for the World Cup."

"I'm upset that all public money for construction, hospitals and schools is being used to build stadiums without any utility," said student Ana Leticia Ribeiro. "After the World Cup, no one will use this."

The stadium in Brasilia was one of the most expensive of the six built ahead of the World Cup warm-up tournament, costing about $600 million.

The local government initially said that only about 200 demonstrators participated in the protest. It said in a statement that police used "progressive force" to keep the protest under control but said they would take action if needed to keep the demonstrators away from the stadium.

"Authorities will not allow any disturbance of public order or any threats against the match," the government said. "It's guaranteed that fans have complete access to the stadium."

There have been violent protests in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro these past weeks as thousands of demonstrators complained of rising bus and subway fares. The protesters in Brasilia said they had no intention of vandalizing any public property.

FIFA on Friday expressed "full confidence" that Brazilian authorities have shown they can manage disorder in the streets.

The Brazilian government said 54,000 security officers are involved in implementing the security plan designed for the warm-up competition. The national defense contingent relies on 20,000 security officers in the host cities, including more than 1,000 military personnel specialized in combating terrorism.

Vodafone moves for Kabel Deutschland in quad-play push

LONDON (Reuters) - Vodafone said on Wednesday it had made an approach to buy Germany's biggest cable company Kabel Deutschland in what could be its largest deal since 2007 and mark a departure from its roots as a pure mobile operator.

Vodafone had been pursuing a possible 10 billion euro ($13.3 billion) bid for the German firm since earlier this year, and hired Goldman Sachs to advise on options in February, sources told Reuters at the time.

"(Vodafone) confirms that it has made a preliminary approach to KD regarding a possible offer for the company," it said.

A deal would mark a change in strategy for the world's second biggest mobile operator that largely owns mobile networks in continental Europe and has previously had to rely on renting broadband lines from competitors.

Vodafone owns some fixed lines in Europe, including in Germany, but has only had so-called quad-play services with TV, fixed and mobile calls on superfast networks in Portugal.

The British operator struck a deal with Deutsche Telekom last month to enable it to offer pay-TV over high-speed broadband to its customers in the increasingly competitive German market, Vodafone's biggest operations excluding its joint venture with Verizon Communications.

Analysts, however, said at the time that the move did not preclude an acquisition of Kabel Deutschland.

Analysts at Espirito Santo said there would be significant synergies available to Vodafone from migrating some of its fixed-line customer base on to Kabel Deutschland's cable infrastructure, possibly worth as much as 16 euros per Kabel Deutschland share.

They said the deal would also help defend its market share in Germany, including against the possibility of Kabel Deutschland ramping up its own mobile offering.

"Triple play operators are increasingly taking share in mobile whereas mobile operators including Vodafone have failed to win significant share in the triple play segment," they said.

"Kabel Deutschland does therefore not just represent an opportunity for Vodafone to extract synergies but also to better defend its core business."

Kabel Deutschland did not immediately respond to requests to comment.

Shares in Vodafone, which went ex-dividend on Wednesday, were trading down 4.7 percent at 182.95 pence at 4.27 a.m. EDT.

Kabel Deutschland shares were up 7.2 percent at 80 euros.

The shares trade at 10.1 times expected core earnings of 947 million euros for the fiscal year ending in March 2014, and it has an enterprise value of 9.6 billion euros, according to Thomson Reuters Starmine data.
