Sauder School of Business by Acton Ostry Architects I Like ...

Architects: Acton Ostry Architects
Photography: Martin Tessler, Nic Lehoux, Acton Ostry Architects
Location: Vancouver, Canada

The $85M Sauder School of Business ? Phase 1 accommodates a 5-level 55,000 square foot expansion with a central atrium, lecture theatres, break-out rooms, classrooms, student social space, and undergraduate centre. The 265,000 square foot renewal of the main level provides a new concourse lounge, business career centre, graduate centre, conference rooms, break-out rooms and cafe.

To achieve a new, bold, identity for the Sauder School of Business, the design team wrapped the old impassive concrete building with a new glazed facade that references the rhythm and pattern language of a barcode.

The new facility is further animated on the interior by means of an inspiring way-finding and donor recognition program. Images of international stock exchanges, forest scenes, and large-scale portraits of local business magnates blend and merge by means of international currency symbols that are used as pixels to delineate the images.

Sustainability
Designed to LEED Gold Equivalency, the building utilizes a campus-wide steam system for heat energy. In 2010, AOA received recognition for the Sauder School of Business and the Water Street Revitalization project
? the first time in the history of the SAB Canadian Green Building Award program, one architectural firm was recognized with two awards in one year.
