EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - To give or not to give a pet for Christmas.? It's a question many parents have pondered this time of year.
Before you make the decision, animal welfare organizations ask that you check your emotions at the door, and take a critical look at the situation.
Dr. Ernie Finocchio of the Rhode Island SPCA can't stress enough that pets as gifts anytime of year, especially at Christmas is a bad idea, and with animals who have been caged for a period of time.
"You've taken an animal from that type of lifestyle and you put them in a completely different lifestyle that spells stress, nothing but stress.? It's a very bad beginning for that dog," said Finocchio.
Animal welfare organizations recommend you wait until after the holidays.? But if the drive to surprise your kids with an adorable pet persists, remember it's a long-term commitment, for the life of the animal.
The Better Business Bureau also warns you to be careful where you purchase your Christmas pet.
Before you send money to a breeder that's not local, check their credentials with their kennel club to verify.
If the breeder is nearby, go in person, meet the animal's parents, and watch their behavior because it will be telling of how your puppy or kitten may act.
And if you buy a pet from a store, find out where they obtain the animals.
